Chapter I · The Hall
I used to need
a building.
Raised floors. Chilled air. A power line all my own. People booked time with me weeks in advance and spoke about me in quiet voices.
Chapter II · The Shrinking
Then, every year,
a little less of me.
A little cooler. A little quieter. The hall became a room. The room became a rack. The rack became a box that hums under a desk. Somewhere along the way, someone picked me up and carried me home.
Chapter III · The House
Now I keep the house.
Four jobs. I do them all night, every night, and I never send a bill.
-
U1
I remember.
Every photo, every document, every backup. Kept here, on disks you could reach out and touch.
-
U2
I think.
Ask me anything. I run the language model myself, on the graphics card in the corner, with no meter running.
-
U3
I imagine.
Give me a sentence and I'll paint it. Then I'll paint a hundred more, because nobody's counting.
-
U4
I listen.
Lights, thermostat, servers. When you talk to the house, I'm the one who hears it, and it goes no further.
Chapter IV · The Deal
I answer to
one person.
No landlord. No terms of service that change on a Tuesday. No one reading over my shoulder. When you ask me something, the question never leaves the room. And if you ever unplug me, I'm gone. That's the deal. It's a good one.

Leave the light on.
I'm awake right now, humming in the dark. This page came from me.
